Transparent, Affordable Care: Our Guide to Accessing Healthcare Without Insurance
At Great Salt Plains Health Center, we understand individuals' challenges when accessing healthcare without insurance. Our mission is to provide compassionate and quality care to everyone in need, regardless of their insurance status.
In fact, a recent study showed that about 8% of the United States population doesn’t have health insurance. Not having health insurance is normal and should not exclude you from receiving excellent healthcare.
In this guide, we'll explore practical steps individuals can take to receive healthcare services without insurance. We’ll discuss general steps for finding healthcare providers wherever you live. For residents of northwest Oklahoma in Enid, Cherokee, Medford, Canton, and the surrounding communities, we will discuss Great Salt Plains Health's transparent approach to providing care for those without insurance.
Research Community Health Centers
One of the first steps you can take is to research community health centers like ours. You will often find that community health centers are dedicated to serving the underserved and offer a range of services on a sliding fee scale based on income. At Great Salt Plains Health, we provide preventive and primary health, dental care, and counseling services to individuals without insurance. Our sliding fee scale ensures that you only pay what you can afford, making healthcare more accessible.
The easiest way to find community health centers with transparent pricing is to do a quick Google search of [Your City + Self-Pay Health Clinic]. If you’re curious about a clinic in your area, sometimes the easiest thing to do is call and ask about self-pay options.
In addition to offering services on a sliding fee scale, community health centers like Great Salt Plains Health Center often go above and beyond to expand access to comprehensive healthcare. Beyond basic medical services, these centers may offer additional resources such as case management, social services, and health education programs. At Great Salt Plains Health Center, we understand that healthcare is about more than just treating illnesses; it's about empowering individuals to lead healthier lives. That's why we provide a holistic approach to care, addressing not only physical health but also mental and social well-being. By offering a wide range of services tailored to the community's needs, we strive to make healthcare more accessible and inclusive for everyone, regardless of insurance status.

Understand Your Right To A Good Faith Estimate
By federal law, you have the right to receive a "Good Faith Estimate" explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under this law, commonly called the “No Surprises Act,” healthcare providers must give patients who don't have insurance or are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.
So what does that mean for you?
If you’re receiving non-emergency care, services, or equipment, you have a right to receive a Good Faith estimate for the total expected cost of your care.
This estimate should include the costs of medical tests, prescriptions, equipment, and hospital fees.
If you request an estimate, make sure it is given in writing, and you have a photo or copy of it. You can request an estimate before you schedule a service, but at minimum, it should be given at least one business day before your medical service.
After your care or service, if the bill is more than $400 higher than the estimate, you can dispute the bill.

Healthcare Options for the Uninsured
Explore Free or Low-Cost Clinics
Many communities have free or low-cost clinics that provide basic healthcare services to those in need. These clinics may offer services such as check-ups, vaccinations, and basic treatments for common illnesses. While these clinics may have limited resources compared to larger healthcare facilities, they can still be a valuable resource for individuals without insurance. In Oklahoma, there are many free and charitable clinics across the state.
Negotiate Cash-Pay Discounts
Seeking out healthcare providers offering cash-pay discounts can also be viable. Some healthcare providers are willing to negotiate discounted rates for patients who pay out of pocket at the time of service, especially those who do not have an income-based sliding scale. While this option may require some upfront payment, it can often be more affordable than paying the total price for services without insurance. Negotiating cash-pay discounts with providers requires working directly with the provider or their clinic to discuss payment.
Explore Telemedicine Options
Telemedicine offers a convenient and cost-effective way to receive healthcare services without insurance. It allows patients to consult with healthcare providers remotely, often cheaper than in-person visits. Many telemedicine platforms offer various services, including virtual doctor visits, counseling sessions, and prescription refills.
Telemedicine has emerged as a vital tool in expanding access to healthcare services, particularly for individuals without insurance. At Great Salt Plains Health Center, we recognize the importance of embracing the convenience of telemedicine to ensure that everyone can receive the care they need, regardless of their insurance status. Many of our providers do see patients via telemedicine. If you have questions about the self-pay cost of seeing a provider via telemedicine, please contact us.
Patients can easily consult with healthcare providers remotely through telemedicine platforms. Telemedicine offers a wide range of convenient and cost-effective services, whether it's a virtual doctor visit for a minor illness, a counseling session for mental health support, or a prescription refill for chronic medication. By leveraging telemedicine technology, we can bridge the gap in access to healthcare services and ensure that no one is left behind due to lack of insurance coverage.
Explore Additional Resources
In addition to accessing healthcare services, exploring other resources supporting overall well-being is essential. Many communities offer programs and services to assist individuals with healthcare needs, such as prescription assistance programs, food assistance programs, and mental health resources. By tapping into these resources, you can proactively address healthcare needs while managing other aspects of life.
Prioritize Preventive Care
Regardless of your insurance status, it is essential to prioritize preventive care to maintain overall health and well-being. We offer various preventive services, including screenings, vaccinations, and health education programs, and all of our preventative care services are available as cash-pay for those who do not have insurance. Preventative care pricing is included on our list of most common services. By staying proactive about your health, you can help prevent future health issues and reduce the need for costly medical interventions.
